SALT MOUNTAIN CULTURAL PARK

CARDONA MEDIEVAL CENTRE

GUIDED TOUR OF THE CASTLE

The guided tour of the Salt Mountain Cultural Park consists of two parts:

  • Descent to the foot of the Salt Mountain, in a special transport vehicle for visitors, and tour through the interior of the mining galleries (500m) with a guide and wearing a helmet. Inside the galleries, the salt’s chromatic variation can be seen, the salt formation, the folds and the curious exterior landscape resulting from rainwater erosion.
  • Tour of the machinery of the Maria Teresa shaft and a photographic exhibition on the history of the mine.

  • The tour is adapted to all school ages. Furthermore, it provides educational centres with the necessary information packs so that the pupils can work on related subjects before or after the tour in the classroom and the teachers can fully prepare the trip.

The tour consists of a walk around the original town centre. Its aim, based on work carried out during the tour, is for the students to identify key elements of the medieval town of Cardona while they ask themselves and think about the reasons people had for settling in that spot during the middle ages.

The tour is adapted to all school ages. A work folder is provided for each pupil in order to carry out the tour, which are designed to be worked with throughout.

In addition, teachers are provided with documentation to fully prepare the trip.

The castle tour is designed so that schoolchildren can make sense of the monument and its historic evolution as a whole.

Throughout the tour, the pupils can get to know the history of the magnificent fortress, the story of the lords of Cardona, the keys points and use of the fortress’s military elements, the castle’s myths and tales, the main battles which took place there, and so on.
